Aafke Steenhuis(1946) is a writer and painter. She was born in Delfzijl, a Dutch harbour town in the northern province of Groningen, near the German border. She studied Dutch and Spanish at the University of Groningen. She is married to Jan Joost Teunissen. In 1973, Aafke and Jan Joost lived in Chile where they observed and participated in agrarian reform. In 1974 they moved to Amsterdam, first living on a ship, a “tjalk”, on the river Amstel, and since 1985 in a dike house near the IJ in Amsterdam-Noord. They have a daughter, Belle and a son, Jannis.
As a young girl, the lingering shadow of the Second World War produced an early interest in the local and international world around her. From 1974 to 1990 she was the editor for culture and Latin America for the weekly magazine De Groene Amsterdammer. Since 1991 she has organised a monthly meeting of the Golfgroep, a group of leftist intellectuals that discuss international political issues. She has kept a diary since she was nine years old. She is a member of the board of a literary work group of the Association of Literary Writers and Translators, www.schrijversenvertalers.nl, de Vereniging van Letterkundigen (VVL).
As a painter, she has followed private lessons in Amsterdam. She is inspired by German expressionism and De Ploeg, a expressionist painters group in the province of Groningen. She uses gouache and mixed techniques. She has reported on daily life in her neighbourhood and during travels in her numerous drawing diaries. Current work includes a series of gouaches around the IJ in Amsterdam and a series about the river Eems. Aafke Steenhuis has had exhibitions around the Netherlands and shows her work in her studio and at the annual “Atellierroute Boven ‘t IJ”, www.noorderijkunst.nl
As a writer, she teaches interview and writing techniques and gives lectures about her work.

La escritora y pintora holandesa Aafke Steenhuis vive en Ámsterdam. Ella publicó anteriormente De wereld als voorstelling en wil (El mundo como representación y voluntad, 1988) y In de cakewalk, Schrijvers over de 20e eeuw ( El Tiovivo; Escritores sobre el siglo XX. Junto con Jan Joost Teunissen publicó en 1974 Chileens Dagboek (Diario chileno) y en 1994 Weerzien met Chili (Reencuentro con Chile). En colaboración con Kiki Amsberg escribió Denken over liefde en macht(Reflexiones sobre el amor y el poder, 1982) y Een branding van beelden (Una rompiente de imágenes, 1996). Asimismo es autora de la colección de cuentos Het meer van verhalen (El lago de los cuentos, 1999), Stemmen van Groninger Dijken (Voces de los diques de Groninga, 2001), Windjammers in Delfzijl, De route van de chilisalpeter (La travesia del salitre chileno; De la pampa a la tierra holandesa, 2007),Verhalen van het Groninger Ommeland (Cuentos de la provincia de Groninga, 2007).

A principios del siglo xx empezaron a llegar al puerto de Delfzijl en Holanda grandes barcos de vela procedentes de América del Sur. Los veleros transportaban a Europa una valiosa carga procedente del desierto de Atacama en Chile: el salitre, una especie de sal que se utilizaba en el Viejo Continente para convertir los suelos áridos y pobres en campos fértiles. De este modo, a un lado del mundo se extraía el abono de las antiquísimas capas de arena, para más tarde esparcirlo sobre la tierra al otro lado del mundo. El salitre trajo prosperidad a Chile y a Holanda.
En este libro, Aafke Steenhuis sigue la ruta del salitre. Viaja hasta el desierto más seco del mundo, visita antiguas oficinas salitreras y pueblos fantasmas, se pasea por la legendaria ciudad portuaria de Iquique, navega en una antigua barca salitrera por el Océano Atlántico y el Mar del Norte para finalmente arribar al puerto de Delfzijl. Se entrevista con obreros salitreros, portuarios, marinos, escritores y agrónomos, y poco a poco saca a la luz una historia desconocida. Un relato sobre un trabajo agotador bajo el inclemente sol del desierto, sobre la represión que sufrieron los obreros en las oficinas salitreras y cómo se rebelaron contra ello, sobre la dura vida en el mar, las tormentas en el Cabo de Hornos y los voluntariosos obreros y empresarios del puerto de Delfzijl.
El libro se publico en LOM , Santiago de Chile (2007). Un documental sobre el libro, con el titulo El oro blanco, se va estrenar en noviembre 2011.
